Toshiko Takaezu passed away yesterday in Hawaii .. A wonderful person who had an impact on many .. I was fortunate to be her assistant at Haystack and she came to Penland often .. A book has just been published on her ...

Home from Dallas ,finished judging the show . 2 artist get one person shows at the Univ. of Dallas next year . Plus I gave out 10 honorary awards .. The event was the closing and a very nice crowd showed up for the event ,auditorium was full... I did a talk and then said a few things about the show . Dan Hammett and his students were generous with there time showing me around ... I then stayed in Charlotte to see the British Ceramic show at the Mint ... It closes on Sun ... It is a must see if you can !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.. Great group of work ....!!!!!!!!!!!

Came home from Wildacres and loaded the kiln with Lucy's help . It took 6 hours and due to all of the short stuff I used 26 kiln shelves . Thank goodness for advancers .... Firing is finished and I will unload on Tues . Will have some new work for the Spruce Pine Potters Market this Sat -Sun . Oct.9-10....

First Firing of new kiln

Kiln was full with my work and a few pieces by Norm S ,Jane H, Lucy H and Pam B. Firing went well but next time I will turn up in the night . I warmed it up in the evening then got up at 6 am . Firing was finished at 2 am . I put in 25# of salt between 11:30 and 2:00 ....The 2 bottom shelves had dry pots in the back . The bag wall needs to be opened up some ...

Loaded a bisk for the maiden voyage of the new kiln ( it does have some bricks from the wood that came down ,I 'm happy to of saved a little money ) With the big auction and family coming I will not fire until after . The Penland auction still has tickets available if you know of anyone that is interested . It is an amazing event with beautiful work generously given by past instructors and residents .

Last firing for my wood kiln ,built in 86 .. We loaded on Mon. (Lucy ,Erik , Cappy , Pam , Jane,Jocelyn etc. ) Full load ,burners on low last night and put the first piece of wood in at 6:45 .Will get a build up of coals soon and turn off the gas .

Catawba festival was fun to see . Found some old pots of mine in an antique booth . Then on to Seagrove to take some work for Ben's next woodfiring . I will be missing it due to NCECA .. A group of the Seagrove potters are having kiln openings April 18-19 .......Sat. April 18 is also the NC Pottery Center annual auction ...Auction donations are currently on view at the center.
